"The courseware, consisting of a set of Mathematica notebooks, is a complete set of fully interactive calculus course materials providing a rich set of practical examples for the students to do. The driving force behind the courseware is the belief that calculus (and mathematics generally) should be taught through student discovery. The program is devoted to teaching calculus in a new and effective manner through the use of technology and the Socratic teaching style, a learning environment that brings student learning to the foreground. The environment is a partnership between teacher and student. Teachers focus on student understanding, but leave the responsibility of learning on the students shoulders.

BACKGROUND

MEI courseware was one of the first significant Calculus reform projects funded by the NSF, 8-10 years ago"the origins going back to the National Science Foundation grants to the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign and The Ohio State University in the late 1980s and early 1990s. All three principal authors of the courseware, Bill Davis, Jerry Uhl and Horacio Porta became involved in response to their perception that traditional math education was not connecting well with today's students. They felt that students can learn mathematics in much the same way research mathematicians do mathematics, and wrote the courseware with this in mind. The first courses (Calculus&Mathematica) were taught in 1989 and have been continuously updated and improved since that time. Thousands of students have learned much of their mathematics through MEI courseware.

The courseware and its authors have won many awards and appointments, including the Ohio State University-wide Award for Distinguished Teaching (Bill Davis), the EDUCOM Award (C&M), the AMOCO Award for Innovation in Undergraduate Education (Jerry Uhl, Horacio Porta), the Mathematical Association of America Award for Distinguished Teaching (Jerry Uhl), appointment to the Mathematical Sciences Education Board of the National Research Council (Jerry Uhl). In addition, the authors have held several committee appointments within the Mathematical Association of America.
